Another inspiration from Reality is Broken:

The idea of a personal avatar that the learner can choose to represent themself.

HabitRPG, ChoreWars, and lots of other Alternate Reality Games use avatars to great effect. Also, the Nike+ mini: http://adamjesberger.net/25695/273322/gallery/nike-mini
