Nicanor (Νικάνωρ ὁ Στιγματίας, cf. Eustath.20.12) divided the conventional two-fold punctuation system into eight categories:

  1. τελεία στιγμή
  2. ὑποτελεία στιγμή
  3. πρώτη ἄνω στιγμή
  4. δευτέρα ἄνω στιγμή
  5. τρίτη ἄνω στιγμή
  6. ὑποστιγμὴ ἐνυπόκριτος
  7. ὑποστιγμὴ ἀνυπόκριτος
  8. ὑποδιαστολή ((βραχεῖα) διαστολή)
