Qouted from Wikipedia:::

Bengali language
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
"Bangla" redirects here. For Bengali speaking people, see Bengali people.

Bengali or Bangla (Bengali: বাংলা, pronounced [ˈbaŋla]) is an
eastern Indo-Aryan
language. It is native to the region of eastern South Asia known as Bengal,
which
comprises present day Bangladesh, the Indian state of West Bengal, and parts of
the
Indian states of Tripura and Assam. With nearly 230 million total speakers,
Bengali
is one of the most spoken languages (ranking *****FIFTH[2] or ******SIXTH[3])
in the
world.

Along with other Eastern Indo-Aryan languages, Bengali evolved circa 1000-1200
AD
from the Magadhi Prakrit, a declined, vernacular form of the ancient Sanskrit
language. It is now the primary language spoken in Bangladesh and is the second
most
spoken language in India.[5][6]

I feel its a sheer deprivation.
Google must consider taking into account a language that is internationally
spoken
and is the mothertongue for FIFTH or SIXTH (Source: Wikipedia) largest number of
people in the world.
The language is a main-stream one, and comprises of a robust amount of
literature load.

I feel Google must consider this urgently,

With its long and rich literary tradition, Bengali serves to bind together a
culturally diverse region. In 1952, when Bangladesh used to be East Pakistan,
this
strong sense of identity led to the Bengali Language Movement, in which several
people braved bullets and died on February 21. This day has now been declared
as the
International Mother Language Day.

BR,
Wasim

Rather than create multitudes of duplicate issues on this tracker, if you would
like
to see your language supported by the Language API, I would suggest using the
Translate Toolkit to upload translation memories.

Can you please let us know more about the Translate Toolkit you have mentioned,

Google Translator has Hindi (Indian national language) feature. I seek Bengali
(Indian regional language) as a feature in Google Translator service. There is
plenty of site contains Bengali these days i.e "http://thatta.hostzi.com".
Bengali is the only language for which now we celebrate the Mother Language Day
in an international form. This is why the people of the whole world respect the
Bengali language. Many unicode software (AVRO) has been made for aiding the
Bengali typing. According to
"http://www.knowledgebase-script.com/demo/article-204.html", Bengali language
is in the 7th position out of Top 10 Languages spoken across the World.

Google should understand the importance & should implement the service ASAP
without waiting for more comments/response.

Bengali is in TOP 7 Position among the world, and Not only its a Indian
Regional Language. Its also a National Language of Bangladesh. Its a Country.
Google Should understand the importance and should implement the BENGALI
Language in The Translation as Soon as Possible.

The Summer Institute for Linguistics (SIL) Ethnologue Survey (1999) lists the
following as the top languages by population:

Japanese (125,000,000)
German (98,000,000)
French* (79,572,000)
* The totals given for Chinese, Arabic, and French include more than one SIL
variety. See chart for full details.

The following list is from Dr. Bernard Comrie’s article for the Encarta

Surprised to see that 'Bengali' is not added in the list of languages of goggle
translator... while hindi and urdu have been already added!!.. while the number
of bengali speakers is more than those languages, and the literary heritage is
notably higher than the other two.. this would surely create a big issue is not
settled ASAP. Anyone of the goggle project team - please update us with the
status & progress report of this issue (379) ASAP.

Google machine translation is the best in the world, and is very poor. I built
a backtranslating chat using the google app engine
(//http://gruffchat.appspot.com/) that I hope will permit users to get around
the shortcomings of even google's machine translation. There are contacts in
Bangladesh who would love to use it--but Bangla/Bengali is not available yet.
Surely there are people in the Bengali IT industry who can be paid or otherwise
motivated to generate translation memories. Is such a project underway, by
google or an ngo, and how can we support it? Please give us some hope that
resources are being devoted to this project.

Those who have mentioned that Hindi is the National Language of India and
Bangla is a regional language of India, a small correction please.

The popular idea that Hindi is THE national language of India is not correct.
In fact, India does not have any ONE National language in particular. It has a
list of languages recognized as National Languages which includes both Hindi
and Bangla.

Also, as rightly pointed out, Bangla is THE National Language of an independent
nation, Bangladesh, which is probably the only country in the world to be born
on a linguistic basis.

Another interesting info: Rabindranath is the only man in the world to have
composed the National Anthem of two diferent nations, India and Bangladesh,
both in Bangla.

Hi,
Recently I have launched a cause on Facebook to support Bengali to be included
in the Google translate. It has got a high level of attention. As a member of
300 million Bengali speaking people in the world, my heartiest request to you,
please include Bengali in your translation portal.

This language plays a major part in Bangladeshi and Indian culture. Its script
and sentence formation is very similar to some other South Asian languages
which has already been included by you. Therefore, it won't cause much effort
to include Bengali as well. Please consider our request and help us to shorten
language barriers further. I appreciate Google's contribution to the world
cultures and heritages.

I too feel that Bengali should be added to Google Translate. To offer
translation services for Maltese (spoken by 400,000 people), and not for
Bengali (spoken by 250-300 million people) is inexcusable. One language is
spoken by 750 times as many people as the other! This is a sad mistake on the
part of Google, and it should be rectified immediately.
