Missing Java17 installation for Mac #3202

Open nus-se-script opened 2 weeks ago

The link provided for java installation will not work with Mac as the Mac version must be Zulu. Hence Mac users will not be able to use this app at all if they are not good with technology.

Team's Response

We do not feel that this is a valid issue. There are a few reasons for this.

  1. Our target users are comfortable with CLI applications and with desktop applications. This implies a level of comfort with using computers, including installing software.
  2. There is no inherent issue with the application. It is usable for Mac users.
  3. In our view, it does not make sense for a user guide to include installation instructions for other applications, unless developed by the same team. This is due to the possibility that the instructions are not up to date or are inaccurate. It would be more appropriate for users to refer to the Oracle website for instructions on installing Java for Mac. Additionally, there are numerous resources online for learning how to install Zulu. Zulu is by no means a small or unknown application that is difficult to learn about.
  4. There will be many users with Zulu already installed. As mentioned earlier, Zulu is a necessary software for many other applications and hence, many users would already have it installed. This invalidates the concern.

Due to the above reasons, we feel that this report is not a valid concern. It is unlikely to be a big issue, and would not occur very frequently. The issue can also be rectified very quickly by most users. However, for benefit of doubt, we could have added a message to specify that Mac users should use Zulu instead of Java.
