Comment 1 by Palacee_hun on 2013-06-29 14:08 For those who may not know, Webvisum is a really unique and powerful Firefox extension. Its most prominent feature is that it solves captchas, those little picture riddles that are put on webpages to verify that the page is used by a human and not an automatic system, a so-called robot. These pictures contain text that are intentionally heavily distorted so that an average OCR can't figure it out, thus if the text is correctly entered it is quite sure that a human is in front of the webpage. The mass-introduction of this concept ruined the accessibility of many otherwise accessible webpages. There exists an alternative since then, the audio captcha (a heavily distorted voice message which you have to decipher), but they are often so distorted that they simply can't be understood at all. Webvisum does a really good job on those little image "bastards", it solves at least 9 out of 10 of them in my experience. But the extension doesn't solve the captchas on the host computer, but rather sendsthem to the server and simply retrieves the solution. And from this fact comes the problem. This service needs registration either through an invitation by another user or through introducing yourself and asking approval to use the service. This has a serious reason: the service provider wants to minimize the risk of abusing the captcha solving service by spammers. That's why I don't think it's legally possible to implement the service in another software without the permission and strong cooperation of Webvisum developpers. It seems Webvisum is not really developped actively an more, so cooperating with them has a very faint chance. Other than that implementing this service on our own would be very difficult technically too, because the extension (which is just the client) is closed source. In the best case if the developpers fully cooperated with NVDA team and approved the porting of the service, I still don't think it would be a good idea to integrate it into the screen reader itself, it could be a great candidate for an addon instead. All in all I am afraid this will be a "won't fix". Changes: Changed title from "webvisum should be intigrated with n v d a" to "webvisum should be integrated into NVDA"

Comment 3 by Palacee_hun on 2013-07-02 06:52 I absolutely agree that someone from the NVDA developper team or a capable addon developper (I am not one myself) should contact Webvisum developpers and look into the possibility of transforming at least the captcha submitting part of Webvisum into a NVDA addon and make it independent from Firefox. If this were approved, that would greatly help Webvisum captcha solving service to survive, because I think a much larger audience could benefit from it. Me personally wouldn't want to see Webvisum go down as Solona did in 2011 (mostly because there were simply no volunteers), but the danger is there as for every software that is highly specialised and for a relatively small audience (compared to the general public). Webvisum hasn't got updated in recent years, except that in its latest version (0.9.1) the restriction in connection with Firefox versions was lifted (it is simply a matter of one line in the property file of the extension), and so it now works with every Firefox version including the future ones. Contacting the developpers might help to "brush up" Webvisum and to preserve itfor the future and make it available for a larger audience. We should take care of Webvisum, now it's the only available captcha solving service. This shouldn't be taken lightly at all.
