UN recognized boundary/territorial disputes #108

Open fraxen opened 10 years ago

I am typing this up here, for the record, but it was submitted as case VUU6SPXXE4 on naturalearthdata.com

I need to prepare map for UN purposes now and then, and there are main problems with the existing database. There are some strict guidelines on what can be presented on UN maps. The disputed territories/boundaries don't match the UN recognized disputes. For instance - in country disputes (Somaliland, Transnistria) are not recognized by the UN, and there are strict guidelines on how to represent the disputes in the Himalayas (Kashmir etc). There are also some things that are not present in NE - like the status of the Egypt/Sudan boundary.

I have contacted a former colleague (Lorant Czaran) who has been working with GIS/carto at UNHQ - he forwarded my email to some relevant people the other day, still waiting for feedback.

Step a) for this is to get the actual recommendations!

We have the defunct Morocco boundary in Natural Earth, so I could see adding the Egyptian one as well. It's kind of a historical figment rather than a real dispute, but fair enough.

I came here to ask about the boundary between Western Sahara and Morocco, which shows most of Western Sahara as an integral part of Morocco. Do you mean this by "defunct Morocco boundary" @nvkelso?

nvkelso commented 10 years ago

Natural Earth recognizes defacto boundaries. The Western Sahara & Morocco boundary still exists as a sliver in practice (narrow strip running on eastern section of disputed territory), but most of Western Sahara has been incorporated into Morocco for quite a number of years (that's the "defunct" boundary" part).

Thanks for the info!

@fraxen I'm pretty far along adding support for different points-of-view (worldview) to Natural Earth via https://github.com/nvkelso/natural-earth-vector/issues/301. Is there a good source for "United Nations" cartographic department country boundaries these days?

nvkelso commented 2 years ago

@fraxen Any tips here? The v5.1.0 release will include ISO point-of-view. It'd be great to add a UN point-of-view, too :)
