Definition (free text, with reference(s), please. PubMed ID format is PMID:XXXXXX)
A theca cell undergoing atresia, marked by distinct morphological and functional changes. Morphologically, it shows rounding and an expanded cytoplasmic area in theca interna cells, along with a thickened internal theca layer and a degrading organized structure. Functionally, it exhibits reduced STAR expression in theca interna cells, lowering androgen production, and decreased ACTA2 expression in theca externa cells, weakening structural integrity. The atretic theca cell also displays altered vascularization.
