Make ELT Zemax File #4

The optical design of the ELT is in Cayrel 2012 "E-ELT Optomechanics: An Overview". Need to translate into Zemax file. Ramya has a macro that handles the hexagons but for now while we are playing with the nominal design a circle is sufficient.

Have the first mock-up, now the question is is it correct

There's a couple specifications to compare against in the paper. First is the field curvature!

"The total Nasmyth field of view is 10 arc minutes, limited by the dimensions of the way-through hole in one of the flat folding mirrors (M4). As-designed optical quality is diffraction limited up to the edge of the curved field at all wavelengths."

I'm interpreting this as letting the FoV be curved, because we can cheat like that for free and the limiting aberration is field curvature. image

If we use the 11.4m radius of field curvature they mention. Then the spherical aberration begins to show. It's mostly limited by petzval and astigmatism but not that much. image

And the spot diagrams are (sorta) diffraction limited for the full FoV! Success! image

Radius was off by a factor of 2 and the field radius of curvature was slighty smaller image

But the FoV is still (sort of) diffraction limited so it's not all bad
