I think a good way to start increasing diversity would be to:
1) Reach directly with invitations to collaborate (I would start by aiming to reduce gender skewness, since as you point out we are all men). That's a good amount of new people, which might be a lot given the project needs, but we could also use that to think about growth. 1) Reach directly to people doing neuroscience in Latin America, Africa and Asia.
I think the highlight series is a good idea, especially we can ask these incoming people to highlight local things that are happening and don't get much attention.
This post is more of an open discussion for something that I think this project should be tackling a bit more:
Currently our contributor base and the projects we highlight seem to come from a very defined demographic and we should be doing better in terms of working towards changing that.
For sure we have only white male contributors.
For the projects listed, I did not get the data, but I fear it follows the same pattern. Not because we only went after those, but because (I believe), under representation is also screaming in open (neuro)science
So I think we should be working more in the direction of actively correcting this. Of course, the trick is in implementation, so here are some ideas:
Find researchers/developers from under represented groups and invite them to participate as collaborators. Listen to them in what would make open-neuroscience.com more attractive in their views for people who are producing good open (neuro)science projects, but are not finding/feeling comfortable in sharing their projects here
Do a "highlight project" series? Where we could ask people to write a little blog post about their project: how, why, when they started. What is has brought them in the long term, what recommendations they have for other people wanting to hop on Open Science projects.
Suggestions and ideas about this are welcome!
