Enables compiling with gcc8 on Ubuntu and MSVC 14.1.

All the changes to the cppunit files are because the library had to be updated to a newer version

Thanks Jarrod, this all looks good to me. @timpokorny I'd be happy to merge this if you're struggling to find time to review it.
