Further Information

This clarifies the existing tag amenity=charging_station (https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:amenity%3Dcharging_station).

While the old tag did not specify the type of devices being charged, eventually the community has taken it to mean "electric vehicles" charging station. However, some places have started to offer mobile device charging spots. These charging spots may simply offer USB-A power sockets (users bring their own cables), or provide dedicated eg Lightning cables for users to charge their smart phone.

There is a great need to distinguish such small device chargers from the otherwise distinct and incompatible EV chargers.

Information about mobile device charging spots is quintessential in this age of smart mobile devices.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Does anyone see any reason not to add this?

It does have a relative low usage of ~ 900+ but looks well defined. The wiki page is from 2017 so it had time to collect feedback. And the wiki page discussions is "clean" as well.

One thing we need to do is to find a good Icon for this https://github.com/ideditor/schema-builder/blob/main/ICONS.md#icons

The main concern is whether the icon would collide with power=outlet https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:power%3Doutlet , but then that tag is also rarely used, so I think there should be no problems.

The following preset icon might be good:
