Stylus chat room #199

I think it would be easier for us to communicate if we set up some kind of chat. I'd vote for creating a Slack channel since I already use it for so many other things.

I believe it has a method to add notifications from other locations, from GitHub issues and possibly from other sites like add0n.com/stylus.html. So you wouldn't need to monitor messages from so many different sources.

Yeah, I was idling on various irc channels a lot in the past so I agree something similar is handy.

I vote for Discord. And thanks to webhooks and the Discord API, it's possible to get notifications of new Github commits, which is nice. Tutorial : https://support.discordapp.com/hc/en-us/articles/228383668-Intro-to-Webhooks

Maybe we can set up a poll on which chat to use... https://github.com/apex/gh-polls

Hippyjake commented 7 years ago

We can set up both and see which one is more convenient.

DanaMW commented 7 years ago

You probably already know this but I will tell you just in case, my Firefox developers edition just popped up a box saying that stylish has been discontinued. Find a replacement? and clicking the button takes me to Stylus. (I had stylish installed but disabled). So that should be good for business :)

tophf commented 7 years ago

So Discord it is. Who's gonna create the channel? @schomery?

narcolepticinsomniac commented 7 years ago

Apparently I'm the only one who doesn't even know what Discord and Slack are. Are they some sorta "app" version of a chat room? Where are they hosted, and what do they even look like? Is it something like the Gitter integration on add0n.com? If so, not exactly wildly popular.

I don't know how much of a demand there's gonna be for a "chat room", but there's no harm in setting something up. I don't see why we wouldn't make a more traditional forum though. Why not set up one of those free forums that provide free hosting with a few ads? Something like this?

narcolepticinsomniac commented 7 years ago

I made a dark style for add0n.com if anyone's interested.

mechalynx commented 7 years ago

Has there been any progress on this? I've recently set up a Discord server and have had to familiarize myself with it, so I could offer help there. Discord server ownership is transferable so one person can set it up and then transfer ownership to someone within the project.

If you've already set it up and are not interested in opening it to outsiders, disregard this.

Discord Chat Room Here https://discord.gg/tzXVNJz

tophf commented 7 years ago

testing webhook notification... Yep, it works: #git-feed.

tophf commented 7 years ago

@schomery, now that discord is up and running, do you think you can expose it more like on add0n, AMO, elsewhere? maybe README.md file?

schomery commented 6 years ago

so are we going with discord.gg? How about the Gitter integration we have in the FAQs page?

tophf commented 6 years ago

idk, discord seems more popular with non-developers. Stylus/Stylish never attracted developers anyway.

mechalynx commented 6 years ago

For what little it's worth, it attracted me and I do intend to lend a hand.

Gitter is practically unknown outside the software world so unless the intention is to constrain chat to very tech-savvy users or actual developers, it's a sub-optimal choice. If that is the intention, then it's preferable, though discord can serve that purpose just fine. From what I've seen you don't have any qualms with using github issues to communicate on this stuff and if chat is needed, discord can be configured for private chat rooms on the same server (rooms invisible to regular users).

I think it boils down to whether you want a chat room that discourages the average non-developer user or encourages them.

schomery commented 6 years ago

I am pretty much unfamiliar with both of these services. So if Discord is preferred, @Hippyjake please prepare a widget so that we can have it on the FAQs page instead of the current Gitter integrator. Having two chat services is just confusing. https://blog.discordapp.com/add-the-discord-widget-to-your-site-d45ffcd718c6

mechalynx commented 6 years ago

If desired, a badge can be added to the README or elsewhere:

Discord

Can link to an invite if the server widget has to be disabled for whatever reason.

(edit: for the record, I just found out that widget allows voting for the same choice multiple times, even when logged in - and there seems to be no way to take votes back, so now there's 2 votes from me for Discord there...)
