6 years ago Well I think we had that discussion somewhere ago and I still believe that's hot topic. Indeed Markers / Favorites overlap a lot though they provide different functionality. Of course end-user might be confused and use them exactly opposite to their intention. I think today there is a status quo by not adding extra functionality to either Favorites / Markers to not overlap. Today there is no good plan of merging completely them and partial merge will only make situation more confusing.
Key differences:
- Marker point without a name, Favorite with a name and probably (very likely) category.
- All markers have an order (trip, itinerary), even if the user doesn't use it from an initial point. Favorites couldn't have an order and markers should be used instead. It is easy to enable Favorites as Marker list.
- Markers supposed to be easy add / easy delete, so they could be deleted after they passed. Favorites could be only deleted with confirmation.
This is situation today and I don't see how it could be converged into 1 entity so far.
I often encounter users struggling with our concept of 'map markers' vs. Favorites.
While everybody seems to understand 'Favorites' and '(Search) History', mostly because of their intutive use also in many other apps and most notably in web browsers, there is a certain degree of confusion about map markers and their intended use or benefit, and partially redundant functionality.
I personally also feel there is some breach in consistency with room for consolidation and simplification. Basic ideas and more clarity could be achieved by somehow merging map markers and the functionality we have developed for them into Favorites.
