When and if it is able to RX packets. Having the ability to act as a digi would be an incredible tool to have. Something us crazy APRS fanatics dream of.

So I'll just leave this here for now...

That's certainly interesting. The only other radio that I know that has this is the Kenwood TM-D710, which can serve as a fill-in digipeater. I think Ian would have to look into digipeating conventions, such as:

  1. Digipeating only packets received as including one's own callsign-ssid in the digipath OR WIDE1-1 for a fill-in digipeater.
  2. Decrementing the digipath once a packet is digipeated, e.g., WIDE2-2 becomes WIDE2-1, or WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 becomes only WIDE2-1, so that succeeding digipeaters will only receive the decremented packet.
  3. For settings that have "TRACE" enabled, adding one's own digipeater callsign with an to indicate having digipeated the packet already, e.g., WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 becomes WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1, and so forth.

And such other APRS conventions. I would refer to this document, in particular the "new paradigm" part: http://wa8lmf.net/DigiPaths/ .

I still have a lot to learn, but I'm one of those crazy APRS fanatics you speak of.

Interesting but expensive in comparison. My idea is a throw away digi. Though super cool. I will definitely look into that!
