Another option for display is exemplified in disk space treemappers like WinDirStat or SpaceSniffer. Spacesniffer especially, with its labeling of minimally padded nested rectangles, could be an interesting template for appreciating biodiversity at a glance, that is, if keeping a tally of the descendants for each node isn't too cumbersome.
