Relates to #57. This isn't a proper fix, but if anyone wants to get running again without crashing, this patch should help temporarily.

Thanks for the fix, @eminence! I'm working on a separate CMIP mode. I think that's more maintainable and predictable if they ever end up changing something else. The permutation of valid modes musn't explode.
