During the step to Release Play itself I got an error from Sonatype:

Failed to retrieve data from /staging/repository/comtypesafe-2707/activity: HTTP/1.1 503 Service Unavailable

A few lines before that error I could see a message stating the staging repo had been closed. After verifying on Maven central and Bintray I decided the artifacts have made their way to the appropriate places and manually completed the 3 missing release steps (set version, tag, push).

The bump of the Play version on play-samples was anything but uneventful for reasons unrelated to the release (namely unmaintained samples, expired certificates, version collision with other libraries like play-grpc).
