All Redirected links are 404 with linkchecker tools and search crawler. So search engines rating down the the plone site. Please check with http://validator.w3.org/.

That shouldn't be the case, at work we heavily use redirects and we have an external company helping us with SEO ranking and they never mentioned that redirects were wrong.

Do you have some examples were a redirect causes a 404? 🤔

If content is deleted, then indeed, a 404 should be raised, though the redirect itself should be removed...
