How do I use .OSM files? #403

I have downloaded a mass .osm file for an entire country at:

http://download.geofabrik.de/

Now I need to load it in Gmapcatcher through settings - custom maps directory - 
type: osm

I have put the osm file in the directory and it doesn't load! What am I not 
getting?

We do not have support for .OSM files, those downloads are vector files, we 
work with image tiles.
On the settings when you select OSM that is the directory structure that will 
be used to keep the map tiles
