Add field in beatmap page for map background source #6908

I think it’s important that every aspect of a mapset is properly credited and attributed. Obviously we can currently identify the songs title and artist but having a space for the background artist credit (a space to link the artists page or a direct link to the original upload) I feel is currently missing.

The current option is to use the description for this but I think moving forward crediting the background source should be required for ranking and encouraged in general and having a dedicated space for it would help with this.

Please use the reaction icons to agree rather than posting.

My bad, posted on wrong account and forgot what I'd originally posted n didn't realise reactions were a thing hahahaha

I'll give my actual 2cents;

I absolutely agree, whether or not adding a dedicated space is the perfect solution I don't know. While many players play with background dim on 100%, it's undeniable that backgrounds are important - they're visible in osu!direct, in song select, when on a beatmap's listing, when searching for beatmaps, etc.

I'm of the belief that providing proper credits to the artist of the background(s) of a set is a necessity - when modding mapsets I will finding the sources for each background used where actually possible. Either introducing a space where credits to the background(s) used in a mapset are required to be placed, or writing into Ranking Criteria that backgrounds MUST be credited where possible in description, mapping discussion, or wherever is best suited.

It sounds like you are mixing up credit and permission of use. Nothing must be credited/attributed unless that is a condition of use. You can already do this in the map description area. Adding a field for this may solve one problem, but next we are going to be getting requests for fields for hitsound creator, skin creator, individual storyboard assets (or storyboard code).

I'd highly recommend using the map description area for the above reasons.

I would argue that the bg is more important than any of those things you mentioned and wouldn’t lead to a slippery slope. The bg is displayed prominently on the website (both the full image and as a banner when scrolling through maps) and in many cases is the primary way people identify beatmaps in game. I think it deserves a space to credit the artist.

Also I would argue that while credit shouldn’t be required to upload (assuming permission is) it should be required for ranking. I understand that discussion isn’t for here but on the forums but I think having a specific field for it for the reasons I mentioned above would aid in that process significantly.

Also I'd like to add that while you gave hitsound creators and map skin creators as an example of a slippery slope, I don't think it's a bad idea to have requirements for crediting those either. It helps give more publicity to people who put time into making custom work for maps, and more importantly, it helps players and mappers know where to go if they want to find more similar content.

While I don't think it should be as strict as for bgs and audio, I think if the host is pushing for rank, they should be required to try at least a little bit to find the creators. If they can't find it within a reasonably small amount of time, then they can safely ignore it.

We should aim for attribution for all creative work wherever possible. This is a baseline social expectation. Not linking back to a background artist is tantamount to wiping the artist's name from a music track's metadata in some cases. We wouldn't do that, so we shouldn't keep allowing the current situation to continue either.

The description field already provides a place for this attribution to occur, but users would rather fill it up with other things instead of properly attributing the components of their derivative work. I don't really see any space on the current design for another field addition, though, unless you just shoved a catch-all 'credits' field nested beneath the tags section.

Thinking more about it a credits field below the tags section would actually be pretty good, and I think it solves the slippery slope thing peppy mentioned. That said I still think the BG is much more apparent than any of the other things and having the space for it would be good.

I do understand the argument that we should just use the beatmap description and honestly I don't really have a great response to that other than something like "people should be allowed to keep the description empty or have it be something special related to the map like a banner if they want" but that isn't really the best argument.
