Changing display settings makes a Surface unusable #705

Hey, I am testing the new Puavo image Fermium with a Microsoft Surface Go 3. You can see my device md-test011 in magdeburg.opinsys.fi. As you wrote some months ago I set the PuavoConf parameters for a better screen resolution.

I started the device and logged in. Everything looks fine. Now I tried some other setting for the screen resolution. With a reboot I crashed my account. I got a homescreen with black parts at the right side and at the buttom ... no Puavo menu, no chance to start any program. Yes, I am an admin of the Puavo device so I could delete the personal home directory. Now everything looks fine as before. Yes, I think that the admin must not delete the complete directory but only the correct file or folder.

I think that this problem will happen when the devices are used by different people. And if any user tries to setup his display settings then he can't work anymore with his user account. What do you think abot this problem?

Hey Ralf,

Yes this is a known issue and currently there is not any better known solution for this. The real solution would be to have a mechanism that could handle centrally/"by device model" /etc. default display scaling. The Gnome default functionality on this display size and resolution is not optimal and therefore there are trade offs in settings on these Surfaces.

We have a plan to rebuild the system behind the centrally managed display settings on Puavo os but this will be slow work. But we will also keep an eye open for possible alternative solutions.
