Note on updateHistory: I see that all the update history is now in the document. For example, if a tag has been updated 6 times, it appears 6 times, each appearance marked with its updateVersion
. The current version of my parser grabs all the versions, resulting in duplicates. When the record is inserted into the database, the database ensures that there is only one version. The way it does that is by inserting the records in order received, with each subsequent copy overwritten. The last version inserted is retained. However, I have no easy way of controlling which is going to be the last version. Ideally, I would want only the latest version. Its GUID would take care of it being unique in my database. I need to know if that is not possible so I can look into modifying my program accordingly.
Note on GUIDs: All the subtags now have GUIDs. That is fine, though I hope that is not for me. I only need GUIDs for the main treatment parts, and will ignore all other GUIDs.

That is correct ... the attribute names are the terms defined in DarwinCore. The reason we use different terms as element names is that DarwinCore implies being in the materials citation world, whereas annotating a generic country
in an entire article only in materials citations can cause ambiguities, e.g. for QC rules, etc.: What to do about countries in author affiliations, for instance? Or the countries collections and their host institutions are located in? All of these might need to be annotated as a generic country
at some point, so I'd rather not restrict the usage of country
to materials citations.
Why is this a problem, however?

Absolutely ... they are simply not applicable in this treatment because the treatment doesn't provide respective data. You'll find a lot of elements being absent in some treatments. We have terms for many things, but only ever use those in a treatment that the latter also provides the data for.
Note on updateHistory: I see that all the update history is now in the document. For example, if a tag has been updated 6 times, it appears 6 times, each appearance marked with its
updateVersion
. The current version of my parser grabs all the versions, resulting in duplicates. When the record is inserted into the database, the database ensures that there is only one version. The way it does that is by inserting the records in order received, with each subsequent copy overwritten. The last version inserted is retained. However, I have no easy way of controlling which is going to be the last version. Ideally, I would want only the latest version. Its GUID would take care of it being unique in my database. I need to know if that is not possible so I can look into modifying my program accordingly.

Maybe you could collect all elements with the same GUID and use the one with the latest version number? Or simply remember in your program which GUID you've already seen in that very parser pass, and only proceed if you have not seen it before, That would ensure you always use the latest version, so because the current version of each element is the outmost one, containing the actual content alongside the version history.
Note on GUIDs: All the subtags now have GUIDs. That is fine, though I hope that is not for me. I only need GUIDs for the main treatment parts, and will ignore all other GUIDs.

yes, that is very helpful indeed. But my extraction program doesn't really have any concept of "first" or "second". (Well, perhaps it does, but I am not sure if the order is guaranteed.) Just to be absolutely certain, I will look for the updateVersion
key, and if it is indeed present, then I will choose the one with the highest value. That will seal the deal for me. I will also store the updateVersion
in my database just in case we ever have to do any forensics work for troubleshooting
Rest assured the order is guaranteed ... enforced by the rules that define valid XML element nesting.

One note: in case a specific tag is every deleted (let's say, retired, because some other new info comes to light, or we discover that the initial parsing by GGI was erroneous or whatever reason), then what flag will you provide for that? So, let's say a treatment author or a treatmentCitation is marked as not being such, how will that be flagged?
OK, I cannot speak for your parser, but if it follows the general rules of SAX parsing, it should produce the elements in the appropriate order, simply because they occur in that very order in the input stream.

IDs for every part of the treatment that I am extracting
I was under the impression that the "special" export you made for me already had the GUIDs for every part as per the comment from @myrmoteras on June 21 above (see https://github.com/punkish/zenodeo/issues/14#issuecomment-504349112). Now that I have discovered that GUIDs were not in it then I am curious, what was special about it?
In any case, please note that I don't just want GUIDs in every subSubSection. I want GUIDs in every part that I extract and store in a separate relational table. I have listed those parts in my comments above (https://github.com/punkish/zenodeo/issues/14#issuecomment-504410952 and https://github.com/punkish/zenodeo/issues/14#issuecomment-504990312). I am listing them again here below:
The unique combinations of the Treatment GUID and the GUID of any of the tracked parts of the treatment are the only (relatively easy) way I can track subsequent edits or deletes to these parts.
