How can we make our community a better place for developers to contribute their best work?

We need to communicate road map and project activity better so developers interested in contributing can more easily determine where their work fits in. Any suggestions on how to do this?

How about adding a page to the docs with links to documentation for the development tools used in the project? And maybe some additional links to repos where best practices have been followed to provide some examples for where different tools or workflows have been successfully/elegantly implemented? To provide some inspiration :)
