Qiskit is very much tailored to IBM superconducting devices currently.
Other backends are possible but don't have good support.
I propose starting to implement an ion-trap backend for Qiskit.
[ ] The simplest thing would be to build new gates (i.e. Molmer Sorenson gate)
[ ] Add some transpiler passes for rewriting in the new basis.
[ ] Explore whether there are any mapping challenges or whether mapping is trivial.
[ ] Add some simulation methods in BasicAer and Aer.
