Forwarding #1046479 from Ubuntu [1]:

"originally found while testing this bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-mplayer/+bug/654047

as I said there:
Just booted up 12.10 daily in VirtualBox (1.0.6-1) and stop does indeed stop.
However, it immediately plays about the first second of the track. it starts
from this accelerated position when hitting play again. admittedly this is a
relatively short 1 minute long song, but that shouldn't matter."

Probably an mplayer issue, as it was playing cached data. Assuming you are
using pulseaudio in gnome-mplayer?

please report the version of mplayer and pulseaudio you are using.

Are you sure it is stop you are clicking? As stop should reset the media
position to the start. Pause will pause and restart playback at the current
position.

Without further info from Walter, I don't think it makes much sense to keep
this bug open any longer. Let's close it.
