We decided against bluetooth as we wanted to eliminate the need for a central hub or the need for another device to grab readings from the plantMon device. So I researched microcontrollers with Wifi options.

The Arduino MKR1000 looks like a good candidate but the Particle Photon board looks appealing due to its small form factor and cloud services.
