And a finite ruling on where thrown weapons fall in this as well.
I always assumed ya cut a hole in one of your belt slots to make a spot for the axe/sword/toothpick and counted it that way. I do rather like the idea of having separate rules for scabbards/sheathes...
Let's see, without looking at anything else, if one purchased a scabbard (we assume it is adjustable to strap on hip, shoulder, back, etc) for each weapon type when you get the weapon... you can reasonably have a sword on either/both hip(s), and on either/both shoulder(s). Even two swords on the same hip... This guy seems to know how to carry an arsenal on his hip!.
I have seen swords sheathed in duo across the back, both over the same shoulder, and I have seen them over opposite shoulders. I have also seen single swords that rise behind the head, but I feel I'd be getting a headache every time I tried to look up.
With a little researching, I see that most weapons can be carried in some form on hips and shoulder/backslung. I could see an argument for a dagger in the boot, or a handaxe on the thigh. I believe archers will have to carry the weapon in one position and the quiver of arrows in another.
I think we should (possibly with some weapon exceptions in mind), determine X number of locations on the body that are acceptable to carry a weapon [not at the ready] and then you can fill those up. Thoughts?
Exactly what I had in mind, Jace. That would limit the ready weapons available during combat to a reasonable number, and I think would make character design more interesting. And whoever writes our avatar creator will need to know this, too!
The Belt of Fetching should be upgraded to allow the character to have an unlimited arsenal safely at home, with the sword, axe, or whatever he wants instantly appearing in the right sheath / scabbard / quiver / etc. for his use when desired. Makes that artifact much less wimpy.
I posit the following weapon sheathing positions: left & right hip, left & right shoulder.
Bows (Drawn or Crossed) will also require a quiver in one of the aforementioned weapon locations. (hip or shoulder, either side) Knives (Dirk or lower) can also be located in a boot. Small Axes/Hammers (St 11 or less; not club) can be also be located in a leg sheath. Pole Weapons can only be stored across the back (over a either/both shoulder(s).)
Unusual Weapons should be marked with exceptions in their own Notes. I offer these suggestions: Quarterstaff uses the Carry Rules of Pole Weapons. Sha-Ken can be carried 12 in one location. Instead of being over a shoulder, they can be carried up a sleeve. Brass Knuckles are on hip (belt) or up a sleeve in lieu of over shoulder.
Rather sounds to me like we have room for 5 "ready to draw" weapons, and missile weapons count as two (one for the weapon, one for the ammo).
I believe knives would also work in a leg sheath, or could be sheathed in two belt slots. Sha-ken could almost certainly occupy a single belt slot.
Double sword sheathes per the picture you linked could cost 3x a normal sheath (similar to double crossbow) but inflict Dx-1 if St is less than 16 for the bulk.
Sha-ken should be stored in the set size that will be thrown (e.g., if you throw 4 at a time, they must be stored in sets of 4 unless the character will take a round to count them out before throwing, as a "ready weapon" cost).
Centaurs probably have two additional weapon stores on their flanks, like a second back.
Creatures who require wing motion to fly, such as batlings, probably cannot use shoulder positions when flying. Lucky gargoyles.
Sounds like the weaponist character sheet (at least) will need an additional section to track weapon slots...
Gems, scrolls and such are carried on the Adventurer's Belt according to specified rules. Larger weapons - swords, axes, crossbows, long bows, etc. - do not have any particular rules for how to carry them when not in hand. This leaves us to have 15 swords within ready reach, despite the ludicrous visions this conjures (at the moment I'm imagining a caddy with a golf club bag-like multisheath - or maybe a kitchen block loaded with swords instead of Ginshu knives).
We need actual rules in place of the visions.
