Updated readme #382

It is not readily apparent about some of the features of the library. I had to look into the actual codebase, which violates the idea that the code interface should be self-documenting without knowledge of the 'black box' on the inside. This documents my findings in aim to help subsequent developers.

I also normalized the markdown because it was a mess.
