Macos/clang compatible #2

This implements fixes to be able to compile the code with clang and on MacOS. The build instructions in the readme are adjusted accordingly and clarified a bit. Some old code was removed. The changes were tested on Ubuntu 22.04, in the docker build and on MacOS Ventura.
