Do I have to create a new application or can this code be used with an existing setup? If so, are their any instructions on how to do so?

This repo is very old, and was intended for use with a version of OpenShift that is now outdated.

For the current version of OpenShift, I'd use the available base images, or perhaps give this one a try:
