(Commentary: it honestly baffles me why this technology didn't become more dominant in the microcontroller world. This technology seems quite the no-brainer compared to RS-232 or SPI.)

Whenever I dream /fantasize of hardware, links/ieee1355/spacewire is the underlying networking stuff.

Came across a few things in recent sweeps looking for open verilog/vhdl/... for ieee1355 codecs:

Atmel TSS901E. Apparent successor chips called SMCS332/SMCS116 (Also seen with a SpW suffix). https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2004ESASP.570E..29F/abstract http://spacewire.esa.int/content/Devices/SMCS332-SpW.php

Further https://opencores.org/websvn/filedetails?repname=spacewire&path=%2Fspacewire%2Ftrunk%2Fdoc%2FReadMe.txt

Nice thesis at http://publications.lib.chalmers.se/records/fulltext/157904.pdf Unfortunately looks to be done for a company, i.e. no open verilog, etc. found for it. Still, the design notes look to be interesting and there are quite a bit of functional diagrams.
