Autotoolize checking for dependencies #38

This PR changes the Autotools configuration to use more portable ways of checking for required libraries, e.g. check.

@andrewjpage This also builds on Mac OS X with Homebrew, given that check and pkg-config are installed.

BTW this is now updated and ready to merge. I have also changed version handling a bit so it only needs to be updated in one place.
