Back button behavior (esp. in Firefox) #74

What steps will reproduce the problem? / What is the expected output? What do
you see instead?
(reported on behalf of another user) Using the browser's "back" button takes
you back to the top
of the page you last viewed, instead of to the point on the last page where you
were at when you
went to the next page. Additionally, the last link followed (be it a thumbnail
clicked or a facet
clicked) is not indicated, either by a change in the font color or by having a
light box drawn
around it.

What browser and operating system are you using?
FireFox (2.0.0.14) on Windows (XP SP2)

Please provide any additional information below.
 >> I tried this on Mac (10.5.3) with Safari (3.1.1), and the back button *did* take me back to the
previous page location. It did not indicate the link/button last followed,
though. (Not a big
problem, IMHO, if I went back to the same location on the previous page; I
think it's only an
issue because his browser dumps him at top-of-page.)

 >> I also tried this on PC (XP SP2) with IE (7.0.6000.16674), and the back button also *did* take
me back to the previous page location. It did not indicate the link/button
last followed, though.

>> I also tried this on Mac (10.5.3) with Amaya (10.1), and the back button
also *did* take me
back to the previous page location. It did not indicate the link/button last
followed, though.

>> I also tried this on Mac (10.5.3) with Firefox (3.1.1), and it performed
just like Firefox on
Windows — it did not take me back to the previous page location, and it did
not indicate the
link/button last followed.

As near as I can tell, this is a FF bug. It works in other browsers, and I know
of no
trick in the HTML that affects this, and so would declare this part of the bug
"Won't
Fix".

The indication of a recently visited page (I think this is what you want from
"last
link followed") could be indicated with an alternate stylesheet setting for
visited
links. Right now, we force them to look the same as other links. The last
visited
indication of an outline around a link is also being suppressed, although we
would
have to ensure enabling this did not mess up the layout.

Adjusting prio and milestone. Can consider changing the stylesheet when have
time to
review the visual impact.
