Hmm, I believe the plan for the 4.0 branch was to only do fast-forwards to stable/4.0. Which is not a good option right now... Would adding the commits in the package be a solution until fast-forward is possible?

I think there isn't really any difference, unless we want to prevent history rewrite going forward (which I think should be good)
