Update documentation #6

Between configuration changes, and changes to the top-level API, we should ensure that the documentation in doc is up to date. It would also be great to add docstrings to the main API vars, so that it's easier to get contextual help about how to use them from within editors/IDEs.

Api docstrngs and readme are up to date. The doc/ has yet to be processed, but we track then in the project board.
