replace pagination number with images

Is it possible to replace the pagination with images?

I want to have a dot like images  instead of
the text links.

Any advice is welcome.

I would like to change the pagination numbers from 1, 2, 3 to years (2006, 07 
etc)
Any ideas on how to achieve this?
