I tried bower-away with one of my projects and it worked quite well except for one corner case.

In my bower.json file I have this dependency:

"dependencies": {
  "cryptojs": "https://storage.googleapis.com/google-code-archive-downloads/v2/code.google.com/crypto-js/CryptoJS%20v3.1.2.zip"
}

The bower-away project turned it into the following (inside package.json):

"dependencies": {
  "@bower_components/cryptojs": "https://storage.googleapis.com/google-code-archive-downloads/v2/code.google.com/crypto-js/CryptoJS%20v3.1.2.zip#*",
}

When running yarn, I am getting this exception:

error An unexpected error occurred: "https://storage.googleapis.com/google-code-archive-downloads/v2/code.google.com/crypto-js/CryptoJS%20v3.1.2.zip: Invalid tar header. Maybe the tar is corrupted or it needs to be gunzipped?".

I am using yarn v1.1.0 and bower v1.8.2.
