I tried a few more times, and it appears that my issue was happing with large files only. I am on High Sierra 10.13.4. A screenshot of the issue is attached. Please note that the selected layers have a distinct color, but cannot be seen regardless of size or zoom level.
This issue is probably not a big deal as it seems like it can be resolved by creating a new, small file with only the artboards you want to use.

With sketch 50.2 I cannot properly generate shapes, and I get three vectors that are irregular sizes that I cannot see on my canvas. even after turning on Fills and Borders these are invisible vector shapes.
