files ending with "~" are kate backup files and should not be processed. Otherwise it raises and error "Unsupported format"

I don't like this approach: fix up your editor ;-)

That being said... there are still a couple of outstanding issues:

Cornelius asked for test coverage
As it stands, those 'backup' files may end up in git - please update the .gitignore file as well.
