things to think about: 
1.a shutter release cable for longer than 30s exposures
2.an attachement to fit canon batteries, will make it 1000x easier
OR  attachement to fit into battery grips...

1. The bulb mode ALLOWS longer than 30s exposure. (Scroll down to the last 
element in the 'shutter speed' list.)

(If there is another reason you want the shutter release cable functionality, 
please elaborate.)

2. The power source can be anything you wish. Just make sure you don't supply 
more than 7 volts to the power input pins and you should be fine. 

Also a design that FITS into battery grips will require significant (and time 
consuming) mechanical engineering work. If a company chooses to commercialise 
this product, then maybe it could be possible.

Note on 2. Can't you have up to 12v input on the Raw pin? (Arduino Pro Mini)
