Finalize and send out 2015 Nairobi conference survey #19

Closed CynthiaParr-USDA closed 8 years ago

CynthiaParr-USDA commented 9 years ago

From Gail on Sept 30

I have created (by duplicating the 2014 survey and modifying it) a meeting survey for the 2015 meeting. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/TDWG2015

Please take a look at it and let me know what you would change. TDWG’s SurveyMonkey account can only have 10 questions (per survey), allows for 100 responses, and will export data and reports. It can also be hooked to our MailChimp account apparently for sending it out (Pat or Stan would probably know more about this than I).

There are no doubt things that are not relevant, but since I did not attend, I don’t know what they are. Let me know specific changes you would make.

Thanks! Gail

I have to say I am not really sure what purpose exactly that survety serves. We might want to clarify the expected benefits before we sent this out to the membership.

gkampmeier commented 9 years ago

p. 1 is baseline information as well as relative consideration of expectations in responses. p. 2 is feedback for future meeting organizers and can be compared in many cases to previous years (is opinion changing?) p. 3 the list here of items in the conference bag (I did not get one, so these probably need to be updated) might help resolve an interesting dilemma of costs. Do people really need a pen and pad of paper? an item representing the locality that is probably mass-produced? What is useful and what would you prefer in your goodie bag, if TDWG/organizers could afford it? p. 4 most useful feedback for the future organizers p. 5 The Exec always has a time trying to come up with themes and tweak the meeting in one way or another. Some think we are getting too far from our roots in the way the meeting is constructed; some require the ability to present in some way to be able to attend, and thus having the kind of meeting that took place 10-20 years ago wouldn’t fly today.

We had no lightning talks this year. Should drop this from that question. Might want to ask if people would be able to give a lightning talk rather than a full talk next year.

One thing we got that I found useful (but maybe others didn't) was a flash drive. I never used it for the PDF of the program but I did use it to copy presentations to projection PCs -- even though I had other drives buried in my backpack I knew this one would have space.

I can't get back to the survey because it thinks I've already taken it.

pmergen commented 9 years ago

Hi

I deleted your fake answer, try if you can get in again ? As you ask about the pre-conference training, think would be interesting to ask if people would like to have such training in up coming editions too. Would not go more in depth then that though as I think Hank will do a more detailed survey with the participants to the training specifically.

gkampmeier commented 9 years ago

We might need to redefine lightning talks. Their original definition was to present innovative or provocative ideas within a strict 5-minute time frame, a pitch, if you will. These were often featured not as entire sessions but as part of other meetings where everyone was together to think about it and then provide a panel of speakers at the end for questions.

Short takes/talks could be another type of category, and we might decide to limit the number of slides (or automate when they would change, e.g., one every minute)…might also substitute for posters???

Gail has very good report of the good responses.

CynthiaParr-USDA commented 9 years ago

Consider posting a PDF of the survey monkey results Minus the comments

gkampmeier commented 9 years ago

TDWG2015_SurveySummary.docx

Basis of what I reported on in today's Skype for Exec Group 1

CynthiaParr-USDA commented 9 years ago

Looks like the survey can be closed and Gail should work with Pat and Stan to prepare the public report for posting on the website.

gkampmeier commented 9 years ago

I closed the survey (although the web link is open for now, but the emailed collector link is not; questions may come to secretary@tdwg.org if someone complains they wanted to submit a survey) and exported reports as pdfs (see below). We had 158 responses.

We talked about not including open ended comments in the report for the website, but several of our questions included such comments and are blank in the report that does not include them. a) do we cut the blank pages and post the Data_NoOpenEnded_151028.pdf report? b) do we move the answers from the other report to replace the blank pages? c) do we summarize answers or choose some answers for those questions and insert them?

Is it important that some answers for those last questions might be recognizable as to who made them? Data_NoOpenEnded_151028.pdf Data_All_151028.pdf

gkampmeier commented 9 years ago

Hearing crickets, I am expanding the narrative list I presented at the Skype conference call--should finish on 30 October with draft to share.

gkampmeier commented 9 years ago

Here is the 2-page summary that I propose to make into a PDF for distribution on the TDWG site about the results of the 2015 Post-Meeting Survey. I have left this version in Word for easier editing. @csparr @sblum @pmergen @dkoureas @hankbart TDWG2015_SurveySummary_Final.docx

I can supply more detailed non-summaries for those interested (Exec and future Program Committee). Please respond whether or not you agree with the contents by no later than 6 November 2015.

gkampmeier commented 9 years ago

A PDF suitable for posting is attached. I am assuming because no one got back to me earlier in the month that there were no changes suggested to the Word file. You might, however, re-read this today to make sure that the quotes used and presumed lessons learned were not inappropriate. @csparr @pmergen @hankbart And then if @sblum or @dkoureas would please post this to the website (news? and a more permanent home with the 2015 meeting) and attach the file (link to "summary"?) indicating: "A summary of the post-meeting survey from TDWG2015 is now available for viewing."

The good news is that I successfully posted a news item on the TDWG homepage for the TDWG2015_SurveySummary.pdf. The bad news is that an error in the RSS feed is now popping up (see bottom of the news column, which I don't think was there before. @sblum I don't know how to fix this. It was perhaps caused by my hiding a bunch of old outdated news items (I didn't want to delete them) and confusing TYPO3...??

CynthiaParr-USDA commented 8 years ago

thanks Gail for keeping at this.

That looks like a formatting error. I'll look into it, but it might require deeper knowledge of Typo3 than mine to fix it.

Hi, I've looked at this and it appears it's the page browser in the News plugin is what's giving an error.I'm looking for a solution and have found a recommendation but I still need to try it out (see https://forum.typo3.org/index.php/t/170724/ ).Thanks Gail for the much needed cleanup, may I archive the old news instead of deleting them?In the meantime, I've turned the page browser off so it won't show the error either. Archiving them would be fine, that way if we need language or history, we can look at them again. Thanks! —Gail

To close out this ticket, William will archive the old news items.

@WUlate is this now done?

It's done!
