We haven't been using name @type for the medieval manuscripts at the UL, being guided instead to use:
name + persName type=standard + persName type=display (for in-line names of individuals)
name + orgName type=standard + orgName type=display (for in-line names of corporate bodies)
placeName (for in-line names of places)
The schema suggests several values (with description) for this semi-closed list. They seem fine to me and pose no problems for validation as the attribute is neither required and users can enter their own values.
I do think it'd likely be a good idea to add personGrp into the list. That way, we're able to replicate all the specific types of names that TEI has a separate element for. Adding personGrp does mean there'll be two entries with attribute values that start the same. The possibility of editorial error when selecting the value will be slightly greater.
