Restoring the pull request #30

This pull request should restore and merge the io_future_reader without breaking compability, by:

Merging right before the original merge into main
Reverting on a seperate branch the revert of the io_future_reader merge
Merging the seperate branch with the main_before_merge branch to maintain a linear commit structure
