Reflecting on the real world in art NFTs

Can we give nature and environment agency on the blockchain? While getting the rhinoceroses or wild bees to understand proper key management can be tricky, we can create NFTs and other blockchain assets that reflect and track the health of natural habitats, animal populations, or even human quality of life in nations or communities.

Art is often responding to the world outside, reflecting its beauty, absurdity, or ugliness. Imagine an NFT art piece that turns yellow and ugly as once green lands become desertified or one that grows and thrives with the successful conservation effort. One of our Fellows would like to create an NFT collection that will change its face based on environmental and human data collected from the city of Arles, France.

In this bounty, we are hoping to see an open-source, friendly framework that would help technically savvy artists and cultural institutions collaborate in creating such innovative, powerful experiences.

Hints and Guidelines

This bounty is specifically about creating NFTs that can, in some way, dynamically change their appearance, or even name and description, even as they are sitting quietly in a collection, adding to the expressive toolkit of digital artists.

Technical hints:

While most Tezos NFTs store all their metadata off-chain in IPFS, the FA2 token standard does allow for such to be synthesized from on-chain information, using a technology called ‘views’
Together with ‘oracles’ - trusted sources of off-chain information on the blockchain -, this makes it possible for an NFT to change its face in response to the world around it changing

Consider the following:

Think about interoperability and compatibility with major Tezos wallets and marketplaces
The solution should allow integration with a diverse range of artistic techniques and technologies, from generative or AI art to hand-painted representations of different environmental states, or even 3d game/metaverse environments
What would happen to the NFT if the off-chain data source dries up (eg. due to bankruptcy, technical difficulties, etc.)

Implementation requirements

Submissions must be open source (MIT license) and documented. A demo environment with an example NFT for testing should be deployed on the working testnet.

Judging criteria

Technical:

Does the code work?
Is it secure?
Is it fit for the stated purpose?
Is the integrator documentation clear and easy to follow?
How easy is it for integrators to make use of it?

Prize:

$10,000 in tez for the best submission

$2000 in tez for the runner up

We reserve the right to not pay out prizes if none of the applicable submissions meet the minimum criteria.

Parametrized NFTs are powerful, efficient, and resilient technique and standard for NFTs that react to external data. Weather Globe is an example of the application of this technique to create an NFT that reflects the weather around its viewer.
