Reference counting problems & SEGFAULT in monitor_directory module

With the directory monitor loaded, the following message is frequent:

GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

Occasional segmentation faults are probably related.
