It's been nearly a year. The wip/tom branch is about good enough, though some issues still need addressing.

Needs some Windows soak testing
FIxed on macOS
Needs testing on macOS Monterey. Does it exhibit the same symptoms?

EDIT: no apparent problems on Monterey after commenting the fix out and leaving BGET2 running for 2 hours - normally long enough to typically reproduce the issue on Big Sur. So fingers crossed, with the fix in place it should be good for both.

Non-goals:

88 - fix after this version. The iteration time is too annoying!

82 - the Tube Serial ROM is over 8 KB again :( - too much debug_print code? Would it help if it were a data-driven routine, rather than a huge pile of inlined code every time?
