None of the criticisms we make are new, and it would be nice to be able to point at previous times they've been raised, especially where people have worked through the implication of violation of the various assumptions.

Some specific things I'd like to find

[ ] Don't use Gaussian kernels they're bad (there are papers that show why this is bad)
[x] Papers that do use Gaussian kernels
[x] Early statements that constant per-capita rates of increase are unlikely
[x] Origin of kernels as a function of traits
