Now that rotation is taken into account, cropping is not a high priority. Cropping is available on most native devices and it's not as smooth on a mobile browser compared to a native application.

Wordpress has built-in functionality to do this - need to figure out how to bring these features to the front end

Perhaps current workaround is to provide a link to the dashboard (JUST for administrators) to edit the picture?
