better document which collections are highly customized

options:

[ ] central list of collections mentioning ease of updates (like, basic, some customization, highly customized)
[ ] more consistent use of README to document customization + 1st step is always to read README in collection

example, IWDL branch is quite different, to update requires some close attention to make sure customizations don't get lost.
