A reference to the reported issue would be constructive in gaining an understanding of the expectations and the timeline surrounding the issue.
It’s difficult because it’s an Apple issue and we’re not exactly sure what the conditions are for reproducing only that it seems to affect M1 base devices. Hopefully Apple will provide an update soon with a fix.
Ok, so this bug is based on speculation from reported issues, and has not been publicly found/disclosed (hence why there is no public link about it), is that correct?
What does "Base M1" refer to in this case? I can confirm that my M1 Pro MacBook is affected by this issue, but a M1 Ultra Mac Studio that I also have access to seems to be doing just fine. Perhaps we can consider changing "Base M1" to "might affect all variants of the M1", and adding your response above to explain the uncertainty surrounding the issue at the moment?
I am not seeing the issue with an M1 Max 16-inch for the record
I have an M1 Max 16 inch and don't get kernel issues but trying some heavyweight x86_64 programs leads to kernel oopses and hangs in those programs.
I have the same problem on a base M1 Macbook air.
I see the issue as well with my M2 Air
I managed to get Debian installed on my M2 Air on Ventura 13.2.1
Pretty sure this is a bug in Macos 12 -> 12.3: https://github.com/gyf304/vmcli/issues/30
Faced this issue a few times with Sonoma 14.0 running on 2022 M2 MacBook Pro.
On the UTM guide for "Debian 11 + Rosetta", the following notice is shown at the top of the page:
However, the notice contains no links or references to elaborate on the issue, and it is unclear what "Base M1" refers to. My 2021 MacBook Pro (M1 Pro) seems to be experiencing this issue, as it cannot install any of the 5 different ARM Linux distribution images that I've attempted to install. A reference to the reported issue would be constructive in gaining an understanding of the expectations and the timeline surrounding the issue. Thanks!
